Our Philosophy
While diagnoses can be helpful to support treatment planning (e.g., many of the modalities listed on the treatment page are specifically designed for certain diagnoses), we do not believe they are something a client “possesses” - they are simply a description of behaviors, thoughts, and emotions people are currently struggling with. We also believe very few are life-long; the majority can be treated with appropriate interventions if the client is motivated to change, willing to be honest with their practitioner (and self) and commit to do the work in between the appointments.

We believe medications such as antidepressants, are an adjunct to treatment, rather than a primary method towards wellness. Often medications such as benzodiazepines (used for anxiety), narcotics/opiates (used for pain), or sedatives/hypnotics (used for sleep) are over-prescribed and taken for longer periods of time than what they were designed for, leading to side effects, dependence, and/or withdrawal. Often clients do not have informed consent before choosing this treatment intervention.
We believe that negative experiences, emotions, and thoughts are a normal part of life and should not be over-pathologized. We believe that just because someone is anxious or depressed, they do not have a disorder, especially if they are facing one of life’s many challenges. Even so, they still may find therapy beneficial.
We believe that if someone is exercising regularly, eating balanced meals, avoiding using substances heavily, and getting a good night’s sleep, the likelihood of them having mental health issues drastically decreases. We believe having community in one form or another is also crucial for ongoing mental wellness as well as finding purpose and meaning beyond ourselves.
